The Great Science Share Day! – 16/06/20

Platypus adults if you have a chance to read this the night before some prep for the activities would be helpful. Also you may not want to do all of them so select which ones look best for you.

Today is the Great Science Share Day so everything today will be about science! Miss Ward, as our Science Leader, is scientifically excited!

There will be some live events online that we will be following today so try not to miss them!

Just to clarify in case anyone was confused, I don’t know who your teacher will be next year, your guess is as good as mine! Higher powers will let you know soon 🙂

What will you ask?

Even if you can’t ask the actual scientist there is no reason why you couldn’t come up with some super science questions of your very own and then challenge yourself to find out the answers!

The following activities aren’t live so do them at your own pace…also they are related to our topic – transport!

Transport related science

You could make more than one straw rocket and investigate how far they can travel by changing design, the size of the straw and whatever other variables* you can think of!

*A variable is a feature, item or condition that may cause change e.g. the size of the straw is a variable because changing it will probably change how fast the rocket travels. Would the wind be a variable?

Funky Flyers Odd One Out Challenge

Take a good look at the images above. Discuss them. How many similarities and differences can you come up with?

Think about:

• appearance
• what they do
• where they might be found

Which one do you think is the odd one out and why?

Remember there is no right or wrong answer!

Let’s finish with a story…

I absolutely love this book and it is the perfect fit for today as Rocket is a keen young scientist! It was our whole school book a while back and I’m a big fan of the author and the illustrator who as well as being highly talented both seem like really lovely people (I follow them on social media) and are fighting for positive change in their field of work. They have a new book coming out in late July with more adventures of Rocket – this time she is in the Caribbean and battling plastic pollution in the ocean! More Rocket and one of my favourite topics?! I am so excited!
